The Challenge

On your arrival, you will be issued with a Brief (still being considered!!) with an emphasis on Creative Design, Access for All and Sustainability. In addition to the preparation of the design drawings, your team will be required to produce an outline schedule of costs for your design and construct a model to illustrate the finished product.

Full details will be provided on the day and professional support will be provided by Architects, Cost Consultants and Building Contractors, who will offer advice on all aspects of your project, and you will have access to a wide variety of materials to allow you to construct your model.

In addition to the practical evidence, your school team will be required to give a presentation lasting no longer than 2 minutes to the judges and all other school teams. At the end of the presentations, the judges will retire to confer.

There will be four judges whose decision will be final. A trophy will be presented to the winning team and there will also be cash prizes both for the winning school, the successful pupils and each of the three runners up. The prize money (for the schools) must be used to purchase materials or equipment which can be used in the field of design, and we would like to have some feedback related to this.

It is intended to be a fun day, but that your team should try to demonstrate creativity, innovation and imagination.

Teachers will not be permitted to use pens/pencils or any other drawing medium during their initial short discussion with their pupils and will thereafter only be allowed into workshops briefly during the lunch break.

The Creative Spaces website www.creativespaceschallenge.net will be updated in plenty of time for this year’s event, but you should refer to it now for guidance and advice, access to Information Packs (which are incredibly helpful) and an archive of past Challenges.

Domestic Arrangements

Schools are responsible for their own transport and are required to provide a member of staff to attend for either the morning or afternoon session in order to satisfy the regulations for supervision of pupils out of school. Packed lunches will be provided (courtesy of Dundee and Angus College) in the workshop. School uniform need not be worn for this event but pupils will be issued with “Creative Spaces” t-shirts and name badges, which they will be required to wear throughout the day.

Creative Spaces will be taking photographs and video of the event for use with printed publications and publicity and the Creative Spaces website to support and promote the work of the organisation. It will be assumed by the organisers that such consent has been obtained before the event takes place.
