PROGRAMME FOR THE DAY 23 May 2018
8.30am to 8.45am – Registration (please be prompt).
9.00am Welcome, Introduction, ‘Housekeeping’ and Formal Opening by Grant Ritchie, Principal Dundee and Angus College, in the Space Auditorium at Dundee and Angus College.
9.10am ‘The Challenge 2018’ by Doug Binnie, Chairman of Creative Spaces Steering Group.
9.25am Commencement of Challenge. Design Brief and Instructions issued – group work begins in College Workshops. Please note – bearing in mind that this is principally a design competition, pupils will not have access to the model making materials until 10.30am – so the interim period should be used to carefully consider the brief and prepare sketches and ideas of the design proposal.
Reminder – Teachers will not be permitted to use pens/pencils or other drawing medium during these initial discussions with their pupils.
9.55am End of teacher’s involvement with groups.
Teachers/Guests will then have three back to back presentations in the Space Auditorium:
10.15am Kevin Ditcham, Year of Young People supported by YoYP Ambassadors: “YoYP 2018 so far…”
11.00am Anna Day, UNESCO City of Design Dundee Manager: “UNESCO City of Design Dundee”
11.45am Mark Ellson, Holmes Miller: “Current Themes in Education Design”
11.30am Preliminary design concepts to be reviewed by judges.
12.00pm Break for lunch for pupils. Packed lunches will be provided in the workshop.
12.30pm Lunch for teachers, guests and visitors in the Space foyer courtesy of Dundee and Angus College.
12.30pm Pupils resume group work.
Reminder – Teachers will only be allowed into the workshop for a very limited period during the lunch break.
1.45pm Judges commence marking.
Teachers will then be given two further back to back presentations in the Space Auditorium:
1.45pm Alison Watson, Class of Your Own Ltd: “Design Engineer Construct! Developing Scotland’s (digital!) Young Workforce.”
2.15pm Susan Whyte, V&A Dundee: “Creating Scotland’s Design Museum”
3.00pm Group presentations (2 minutes MAXIMUM per group). The presentations will be timed!
4.00pm Judges’ decision and presentation of awards in the Space Auditorium by Doug Binnie, Chairman of Creative Spaces and Diarmid McLachlan, President of the Dundee Institute of Architects.
4.30pm End of event. All times are approximate.

Year of Young People
Title: “YoYP 2018 so far…presented by YoYP 2018 Ambassadors”.
Description: YoYP 2018 Ambassadors from Dundee, Angus, Fife and Perth & Kinross will give a brief update about the Year so far and what’s been happening in each area.
Presenter: Kevin Ditcham from Young Scot supported by YoYP 2018 Ambassadors.
Dundee Design Month
Title: “UNESCO City of Design Dundee”
Description: What is a UNESCO City of Design, why was Dundee awarded the designation and how are we using it to influence a city which is better for to live in for all its citizens.

Holmes Miller
Title: “Current Themes in Education Design” Description: Current themes in education design being employed today, and how we see the school setting evolving over the coming decades. Presenter: Mark Ellson
Class of Your Own Ltd
Title: “Design Engineer Construct! Developing Scotland’s (digital!) Young Workforce”.
Description: In the Year of Engineering and Year of Young People, Alison will present the outstanding opportunity for Scotland’s young talent that is the Digital Built Environment and showcase the work of DEC students and teachers.

V&A, Dundee
Title: “V&A Dundee: Creating Scotland’s Design Museum”
Description: The presentation will explore the architecture, build and design rationale behind V&A Dundee, allowing people to understand and appreciate the building, as well as learning more about the process of its construction.
